Dating my Chanel bag: The simple and effective guide
Owning a Chanel bag means owning a true piece of fashion history.
But how can you tell whether your precious bag dates from the 1980s, the 1990s, or whether it is a more recent model? Whether you are a collector, a vintage lover, or simply curious to learn the age of your treasure, there are several ways to date a Chanel bag accurately.
Here are a few tips to help you identify its production period!
The serial number
The serial number is the first step in dating a Chanel bag. It can be found inside the bag on a small sticker label.
Chanel introduced serial numbers in the mid-1980s, so you will not find a serial number on bags produced before 1986.
Every bag produced after the mid-1980s has this unique number, which allows you to place it within a specific period.
Here are some key milestones:
- 1986 - 1991: Serial numbers contain 7 digits, generally beginning with 0. Please note that some of these early Chanel serial numbers sometimes had only 6 digits, often starting directly with 1 or 2, without the initial zero.
- 1991 - 2005: Serial numbers remain 7 digits long, but no longer begin with a "0";
- 2005 - 2021: Serial numbers are now 8 digits long, allowing Chanel to keep up with growing production and strengthen its fight against counterfeiting.
- 2021 and after: Chanel introduced an RFID chip to replace the traditional sticker, making dating by serial number more difficult, while ensuring greater traceability.
In this example, the serial number 1215447 indicates a production year between 1989 and 1991. |
In this example, the serial number 4232329 indicates a production year between 1996 and 1997. |
If you have access to your bag’s serial number, you can use the table below to determine its production period more precisely.

If your Chanel bag does not have a serial number, there may be two reasons for this:
1- It was produced before 1986, the year Chanel introduced serial numbers.
2- The sticker label bearing the serial number may have peeled off over time.*
* In many cases, even if the sticker label bearing the serial number has come off, you may still be able to identify where it was originally placed thanks to traces of adhesive residue; or the sticker may have only partially peeled away, making the serial number impossible to read.
In this second case, where the sticker label has come off entirely or partially, you can follow the other tips below to determine its year, or at least its period of production:
The Chanel authenticity card
You may still have the Chanel authenticity card, even if the serial number sticker inside the bag has peeled off or become unreadable.
The serial number of the bag appears on this Chanel authenticity card, which means you can read it directly and refer to the table above to determine its year of production.

- In this example, the serial number 4919308 dates the bag to between 1996 and 1997.
In conclusion, several situations are possible:
- Your Chanel bag never had a serial number sticker or an authenticity card: in that case, it was produced before 1986.
- Your Chanel bag no longer has its serial number sticker because it has become unreadable or has completely peeled off over time, but you still have its Chanel authenticity card showing the serial number, which allows you to determine its year of production.
- Conversely, you may have misplaced your bag’s Chanel authenticity card, while the serial number sticker is still present inside, allowing you to determine its year of production.
- In the best-case scenario, the bag still has both its Chanel authenticity card and its serial number sticker, and the numbers match.
- In the worst-case scenario, you have misplaced the Chanel authenticity card and the serial number sticker is either unreadable or has peeled off.
In this last case, where you have neither the Chanel authenticity card nor the serial number sticker, it is no longer possible to determine the bag’s exact production date on your own without consulting an expert in the brand or Chanel directly.
However, you can still follow the other tips below to determine its period of production.
24K gold-plated hardware
The 24k gold-plated finish is a useful indicator when dating a Chanel bag.
If you own a Chanel bag produced before 2009, there is a good chance that its hardware is 24k gold-plated, a rare and luxurious feature that the brand no longer uses today.
In this example, 24k gold-plated hardware can be identified by the presence of a hallmark.

Since late 2008, Chanel has chosen to use high-quality gold-tone metal finishes rather than pure gold, making vintage pieces with 24k gold-plated hardware especially sought-after and valuable among collectors.

The bag model and its characteristics
Some Chanel bag styles are emblematic of a specific era. The iconic Timeless 2.55, first introduced in 1955, has of course stood the test of time, but its design has been reinterpreted several times over the decades.
In addition, certain limited editions or collaborations can offer valuable clues as to the year your bag was produced.
For example, the Boy bag, introduced in 2011, is a clear indication that your bag comes from the last decade. Likewise, details such as floral motifs or specific prints can often be linked to particular seasonal collections.
Wear on leather and chains: a signature of time
The leather of a Chanel bag can also reveal a great deal about its age. Older models, especially those made from lambskin or tweed, tend to show distinctive signs of wear. If the leather has developed a natural patina, this is usually a good indication that your bag has several decades of history behind it. Likewise, the house’s signature leather-interwoven chains and metal hardware can also reveal their age: older chains and CC logos in gold-tone metal were plated in 24k gold, giving them a unique shine.
Consulting an expert or obtaining certificate of authenticity
Finally, if you still have doubts about the age of your bag, or if you would like a more precise assessment, do not hesitate to consult an expert. Auction houses, boutiques specializing in pre-owned luxury, or even Chanel itself may be able to help you date and authenticate your bag as accurately as possible.
